Criterion Games may be gearing up to reveal a reboot of the dormant Burnout series, if an interview on the studio’s official website is any indication.

Hosted in the aftermath of E3 last month, the transcript is with Producer Pete Lake, a stalwart of the high-octane racing franchise. In the post, Lake hinted that the creative team are “working on a couple of super-secret things that I can’t talk about yet. But we’ll have something amazing to reveal soon…!”

Though there isn’t an awful lot to go on based on the producer’s nebulous tease, we’ve long heard of Criterion’s desire to release a Burnout-esque racer, and at one point the developer was even attached to spearhead an F-Zero reboot for Wii U under Nintendo. Alas, this tantalizing arrangement never came to pass, but we do know that Criterion is toiling away on a brand new first-person sports title that is without a release date – or window – at the time of writing.

And so, that brings us to the industry’s next big event: Gamescom. Though Sony has opted to forgo the press event in Cologne in favor of the Paris Games Week in October, there will still be video game news aplenty during August, and it could well be that Criterion will unveil one of these “super-secret things” in a few weeks’ time.

After churning out 5 fully-fledged installments in only 7 years, the Burnout series teetered dangerously close to the point of saturation during the noughties. Will the franchise be primed for a re-reveal at Gamescom next month? Time will tell.
