It’s a question that has been on the lips of the franchise’s legions of fans ever since Katniss’ journey started drawing to a close last November: will there be a future for The Hunger Games on the silver screen following the release of Mockingjay – Part 2?

In a recent interview on Conan, Josh Hutcherson’s slip of the tongue has fuelled speculation that Lionsgate will sanction a prequel or sequel after fallout from The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 later this year. When quizzed about potential spinoffs, Hutcherson was quick to say that “there is” plans in place, though the actor was quick to ensure that nothing else was spoiler ahead of time.

“I’m sorry, I can’t say that,” he added. “We’ll see what happens.”

Truth be told, neither Hutcherson nor Lionsgate are fooling anyone at this point. After all, Mockingjay – Part 1 grossed a staggering $750,000,000 at the worldwide box office last year, and all signs point to its sequel emulating the record – and perhaps even touching the coveted $1 billion mile marker – when it debuts in November.

With the Capitol embroiled in an all-out war, Katniss Everdeen must rally the troops from the long-lost District 13 to overthrow the devious President Snow and bring about a new era of peace to all the Districts. Liam Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson, Julianne Moore, Elizabeth Banks, Woodly Harrelson and Donald Sutherland complete the star-studded ensemble.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 will bring the curtain down – even if it is only momentarily – on Lionsgate’s lucrative franchise when it makes its bow on November 20.

With the nation of Panem in a full scale war, Katniss confronts President Snow (Donald Sutherland) in the final showdown. Teamed with a group of her closest friends – including Gale (Liam Hemsworth), Finnick (Sam Claflin), and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) – Katniss goes off on a mission with the unit from District 13 as they risk their lives to stage an assassination attempt on President Snow who has become increasingly obsessed with destroying her. The mortal traps, enemies, and moral choices that await Katniss will challenge her more than any arena she faced in The Hunger Games.
