In news that should come as no surprise to those who have kept up with the show’s record-breaking viewing figures, HBO has renewed Dwayne Johnson’s sports comedy Ballers for season 2.

According to the network, Stephen Levinson – screenwriter behind Entourage and Boardwalk Empire – is expected to return at the helm of the show, which charts the lives of a group of former and current football players. The crux of the series, though, is Dwayne Johnson. As one of Hollywood’s most profitable superstars of the moment, it’s apropos that the former WWE wrestler plays an iconic role in the show itself.

As Spencer Strasmore, Johnson stars as a former Miami Dolphins star looking to change his image off the pitch as a financial manager, handling the finer monetary details of his crew as they enjoy a lavish lifestyle. What this means for Johnson is imparting wisdom as a former athlete who has been there, done that and worn the t-shirt (quite literally), though Ballers makes room for the likeable actor to get involved in the comedy aspects, too.

No word yet on if the remaining members of the cast, which includes John David Washington, Omar Miller, Donovan W. Carter, Troy Garity, London Brown, Jazmyn Simon and Rob Corddry, will make it onto Season 2, but we’ll be sure to keep you updated.

Ballers will bring an end to its ten-episode first season on August 23, and it’s understood that HBO will keep the momentum running so that the sophomore season returns next year for a similar summer window. Tell us, are you excited to see the sports drama get a renewal? Indeed, do you think it’s a deserved reward?
