The Suicide Squad trailer that Comic-Con attendees went bananas for during Warner Bros. and DC Comics’ Hall H panel earlier today has finally made its way online, and it’s easy to see what all the hubbub was about.

The trailer rivals the second one for Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice in terms of fan service and distinct aesthetic – and given that this is a much smaller and trickier film to make, that’s a credit to the incredible talent of helmer David Ayer. His command of the gritty, realistic tone is what’s going to make this movie work.

Of course, the impeccable cast is also a major draw, and that’s the main purpose of this trailer, introducing congoers to the diverse lineup of the actual Suicide Squad, which includes Deadshot (Will Smith), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) and the Joker (Jared Leto), along with a variety of other Arkham-hardened rogues. They’re all brought together by Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), who schemes to put together a team of evildoers to do good (and screw them over if things go south).

It’s a terrific trailer, complete with Harley Quinn acrobatics, Batman (Ben Affleck) chasing down the villains and the Squad assembling for some supervillainous antics. But the money shot to end all money shots is definitely the big reveal of the Joker at the end. Leto nails it, immediately creating a version of the Clown Prince of Crime that’s at once terrifying, delectably satisfying for comic-book fans and even more fully committed than we had expected from the Oscar winner. “Oh, I’m not going to kill you,” he cackles into the camera. “I’m just gonna hurt ya, really, really, bad!”

Suicide Squad opens August 5, 2016.
