Whether you’re a fan of the seminal video game series or its cinematic adaptions – or indeed both – Deadline brings word that a familiar face will be returning for Screen Gems’ conclusive actioner Resident Evil: The Final Chapter: Ali Larter’s Clare Redfield.

Having brought the beloved character to life in both Resident Evil: Extinction and Resident Evil: Afterlife, the actress will now reprise her role alongside series stalwart Milla Jovovich, who returns as Alice. Picking up following the aftermath of 2012’s Retribution, the latest and final entry into the franchise will see the Red Queen issue one last-ditch attempt to wipe the remnants of humanity off the face of the earth. With the fate of the world hanging in the balance once again – surprise! – Jovovich and Larter will be joined by Wentworth Miller, who is on board to play the latter’s sibling, Chris Redfield.

Given that this is the final installment in Screen Gem’s lucrative video game adaptation, The Final Chapter will likely push the franchise’s global box office haul past the $1 billion mile marker, as it is currently hovering around $915 million across five films. Yes, Screen Gems’ post-apocalyptic series isn’t likely to win Oscars anytime soon, but it’s clear there remains an audience for the stylized and bombastic action – particularly overseas.

Plus, with numerous TV networks already expressing an interest in the rights, it’s likely that the Resident Evil storyline will continue in some shape or form independent of Capcom’s video game franchise. Whether a future project would revolve around Project Alice or a new thread entirely, however, remains to be seen.

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is set to begin shooting in September in Cape Town, South Africa ahead of a planned release on September 2, 2016.
