After a long and arduous wait, 20th Century Fox debuted two versions of the much-hyped Deadpool trailer earlier this week, sending the vying masses into a collective tailspin as fans picked apart every blood-red frame of Tim Miller’s impressive sizzle reel. Pulling no punches, the volatile mix of R-rated action and comedy went down a treat, and now Empire has debuted a play-by-play breakdown of that trailer that includes commentary from Miller himself.
Covering the appearance of Colossus, sequel ideas and those Green Lantern jibs, here the director adds context to the mayhem, and the first thing Miller touched upon was the possibility of Deadpool 2 including the villain Cable.
[zerg]There aren’t really many definitive Deadpool villains, apart from Cable. If we don’t put Cable in Deadpool 2 I think we’ll be run out of town on a rail.
Following that, the filmmaker addressed the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it shot of Piotr Rasputin – aka Colossus – and how Daniel Cudmore was initially offered the CG-heavy part.
I did actually call Daniel Cudmore to ask him if he wanted to do this, even though he’d be entirely CG the whole time. He was very nice about it. He was like, ‘I appreciate your offering, but nah.’
As for those Green Lantern jokes, Miller went on to reveal that the first cut of the film included plenty more than a simple dig at Reynolds’ underwhelming turn as Halo Jordan. In fact, the DVD extras ought to include an exchange between Reynolds’ cocksure Wade Wilson and Colossus that picks apart Martin Campbell’s derided 2011 actioner, with Miller revealing that the joke will likely be cut..
We shot a few more Green Lantern jokes, but I’m not sure how many will survive the cut. Ryan definitely had some Green Lantern issues to work out. We had about a minute’s worth of dialogue between him and Colossus where he talks about it, like, ‘So a guy comes with a thousand-dollar suit and says, “We want you to play a superhero,” but there’s no script yet and the release date is completely unmakeable…’ He goes on this whole anti-Green Lantern run, but I’m not sure it’ll stay in, because probably not even half the people in the theatres will get those jokes…that scene’s one for the DVD extras, for sure.
Deadpool will blast onto cinema screens in all of his eye-popping glory on February 12, 2016.
