Promo For Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 3, Episode 2; “Purpose In The Machine”

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returned to ABC last night for an explosive premiere which saw the debut of new threats and the beginnings of the Secret Warriors. It also showed Simmons (who vanished in the season two finale) in a very strange location, and speculation has since been running wild about where exactly she may have ended up.

Well, that’s a mystery which is set to be addressed in next week’s episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and Marvel and ABC have today released a first look promo offering a hint at what’s to come.

The episode – titled “Purpose In The Machine” – has been described as follows by the network:

Fitz and the team enlist the aid of an Asgardian to unlock the secrets of the ancient monolith that swallowed Simmons, and Agent May is at a crossroads in her personal and professional life.

As you can see from the video above, Grant Ward’s Hydra is also going to take centre stage in the episode, and what’s next for him is equally as compelling as Simmons’ fate. After all, it looked like he may have been returning to his old heroic ways in season two of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., but the death of his girlfriend has clearly pushed Ward straight into full on villain mode.
