Over the past few months, Mad Max: Fury Road director George Miller has been named as a favourite to direct the currently undated Man of Steel sequel. While he’s already confirmed that won’t be happening, the filmmaker has now shared some comments which are sure to make you wish he’d change his mind.

Asked how he would go about making the character work on the big screen, Miller explained:

“I think it’s been said many times before: he’s potentially a very boring character because he has no faults. So you really have to find his demons really to get an internal conflict going. You’ve really got to do that. Whether that’s by an external agency or something deep inside himself. You need that conflicted character. That’s what made the Greek gods so great. I mean they were jealous, vengeful, hubristic. They had all these things going for them. I think that’s why Batman’s such an interesting character because he’s human, so he’s just like us. He’s relatable, rather than someone who’s just perfect.”

The director makes a great point, and while Zack Snyder did an excellent job with Superman in Man of Steel, it wasn’t the critical or commercial hit Warner Bros. were expecting it to be. The character is obviously going to have a key role in both Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and the upcoming Justice League movies, but a lot of fans still want another solo outing.

When that’s going to happen remains to be seen, but Miller again emphasized that he won’t direct:

“I’ll basically say no. Sorry again, not trying to be coy about it. You have so many things lined up. You just don’t know which one’s going to break […] the next film I want to do won’t be a Mad Max film. It’ll be a small film. I just want to get away from big action films for a while. But I just can’t help myself. I like to do things which are technically not challenging but technically interesting.”

It would be nice to think that the studio can talk him into tackling Superman, but for now, unfortunately, it seems like they’ll need to turn their attention elsewhere.
