Luke Cage Recruits Sonia Braga As Claire Temple’s Mother Soledad

Melissa Rosenberg's adorned Jessica Jones may be the talk of Hell's Kitchen at the moment, but Marvel is quietly laying the groundwork for its next entry into its budding small-screen universe: Luke Cage. Photos emerging from the New York set have showcased a sharp-suited Mike Colter, and today the studio has welcomed a newcomer to the project in the form of Sonia Braga.

Announcing the addition of the Kiss Of The Spider Woman star via Twitter, Marvel noted that the award-winning actress will be stepping into the shoes of Claire Temple’s (Rosario Dawson) mother, Soledad Temple.

Joining the ranks as a core part of Marvel and Netflix’s third superhero drama, here’s the official announcement per Marvel.

If you’re not already up to speed, Dawson’s Claire Temple – who has been confirmed to appear in the maiden season of Luke Cage – plays a love interest to Marvel’s ex-con in the comic book series, though the jury’s still out on whether the live-action rendition will toe the same trajectory.

Either way, Marvel’s small-screen quartet will culminate with The Defenders, uniting Colter’s Cage, Charlie Cox’s Daredevil and Jessica Jones along with Iron Fist – and we expect news on the latter hero to surface sooner rather than later.

Those of you who are fully caught up with Jessica Jones will have seen Mike Colter’s formidable hero in action, though Luke Cage will be given a chance to stand on his own two feet when Marvel’s standalone series debuts in early 2016. Cheo Hodari Coker takes point as showrunner.

After a sabotaged experiment leaves him with super strength and unbreakable skin, Luke Cage (Mike Colter) becomes a fugitive trying to rebuild his life in modern day Harlem, New York City. But he is soon pulled out of the shadows and must fight a battle for the heart of his city–forcing him to confront a past he had tried to bury.
