Part and parcel of the Spider-Man agreement between Marvel and Sony Pictures meant that executives from the latter studio were screened an early cut of Captain America: Civil War so that they could give a pass on its portrayal of Tom Holland’s webslinger.

That’s according to Heroic Hollywood, citing sources close to the project. Indeed, news of Sony wanting to keep a close eye on Spider-Man is hardly a surprise; after all, the studio still holds power to finance, distribute and have final creative control over the costumed hero, even when he’ll be lining up alongside the Avengers in next year’s superhero ensemble piece.

This mutually beneficial partnership extends to Jon Watts’ Spider-Man 2017 standalone feature, which will be produced by both Marvel and Sony. Considering that Tom Holland’s debut in Civil War will set the tone for what’s to come from the character, it’s not beyond the realm of imagination that executives from Sony still exerted some element of creative control before leasing the character back to his native studio.

Captain America: Civil War makes a beeline for theaters on May 6, 2016. To whet your appetite, check out the new behind-the-scenes image of Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) suiting up for battle.
