Ever since Netflix and Judd Apatow inked a two-season deal for romantic comedy series Love in late 2014, all has been quiet as the show began to pick up steam. Fast forward to today and ahead of the series premiere in mid-February, the online streaming giant has debuted the very first image and teaser for Apatow’s latest, showcasing Paul Rust and Community‘s Gillian Jacobs in the starring roles.
Centering on the core and mismatched dynamic between Rust’s do-gooder Gus and the unhinged wild child of Jacobs, Love has been pitched as a modern-day story of a romance between two self-proclaimed commitaphobes. The official logline for Netflix’s new original drama describes Apatow’s new creative venture as so: “They’ve had plenty of romantic misses. But when a jaded Angeleno meets a nerdy guy, they may figure out this “love” thing.”
And though today’s teaser clip tells us next to nothing beyond that vague synopsis, there’s reason to be hopeful ahead of the show’s arrival in little over a month’s time. For one, Apatow has defined his career on a string of frank and refreshing romantic comedies, and when Netflix’s new sitcom boasts an ensemble cast that also includes the likes of Dave Allen, Steve Bannos, Chris Witaske and singer-songwriter Chantal Claret, Love has earned its pre-release buzz. Besides, with a premiere tactically aligned to cushion those post-Valentine’s Day blues (or to fan the bliss), we imagine that the series will have no trouble finding an audience of its own.
Rust, Jacobs and Apatow will revel in the modern pitfalls of Love when Netflix’s latest original series premieres with a ten-episode season on February 19. It’ll be followed by an extended 12-episode series in 2017.
