Seeing as how the hit new TV series Supergirl employs several veterans of the Superman family history, chief among which are Dean Cain and Helen Slater, many fans thought it was just a matter of time before Smallville’s Supergirl, Laura Vandervoort, entered the fray. Today is the day that we can confirm that Ms. Vandervoort will indeed appear on the show, although it will be in a much more villainous capacity.
It was revealed today at the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour that she will play a recurring role as Indigo, and her character is described as follows:
“A living, strong-willed supercomputer that was sentenced to Fort Rozz after turning against the people of Krypton. Now on Earth, Indigo will let nothing stand in her way.”
If that sounds similar to Brainiac, it should. You see, Indigo is technically Brainiac 8, at least in the comic books. Given the fact that she has already been a prisoner in Fort Rozz and seemingly not sent back in time as her literary counterpart was, it seems that she will be streamlined to work within the confines of the show. Although Indigo was more so a Teen Titans villain in the comic books, Brainiacs have a storied history with Superman and his family, so this creative decision makes quite a bit of sense.
It’s also important to note that another recurring role was announced at TCA, that being Jeff Branson as Master Jailer. Here’s the official word on his character:
“As the forceful and unrelenting jail guard on Fort Rozz, Master Jailer showed no mercy. Now on Earth, he is hellbent on catching all of the Fort Rozz escapees and brutally bringing them to justice.”
While not being the most well known Superman villain, the character has been around since 1979. Anyone who was a prison guard on Fort Rozz is probably not to be trifled with and it looks as though the Girl of Steel will have her hands full later this season.
Supergirl returns with new episodes on Monday, January 18 at 8:00 pm EST on CBS.
