Before he brought us the likes of the Hannibal TV show and Dead Like Me, lifelong Star Trek fan Bryan Fuller began his career writing for Deep Space Nine and Voyager – and now some 15 years later he gets to return to the franchise he’s loved since he was a kid.

CBS has announced that Fuller will board their new Star Trek series as co-creator and showrunner, alongside fellow franchise alum Alex Kurtzman.

The press release contains quotes from both of them and can be seen below:

My very first experience of ‘Star Trek’ is my oldest brother turning off all the lights in the house and flying his model of a D7 Class Klingon Battle Cruiser through the darkened halls. Before seeing a frame of the television series, the ‘Star Trek’ universe lit my imagination on fire,” said executive producer Bryan Fuller. “It is without exaggeration a dream come true to be crafting a brand-new iteration of ‘Star Trek’ with fellow franchise alum Alex Kurtzman and boldly going where no ‘Star Trek’ series has gone before.

Bringing ‘Star Trek’ back to television means returning it to its roots, and for years those roots flourished under Bryan’s devoted care,” said executive producer Alex Kurtzman. “His encyclopedic knowledge of ‘Trek’ canon is surpassed only by his love for Gene Roddenberry’s optimistic future, a vision that continues to guide us as we explore strange new worlds.

Currently, there aren’t any details on which characters the show will focus on, or whether it’ll even be set within the same continuity as the current movie series or not, but Fuller has said in the past that if he ever did get the chance to come back to Star Trek, that he’d love to be true to the spirit of the original series.

That certainly sounds promising, but we’ll just have to wait until we get more details on the show before we make a final judgement. For now though, color us intrigued.

Tell us, are you happy to see Fuller take the reigns of CBS’ upcoming series? Sound off below and let us know.
