Guests at a recent wedding found themselves in a bind when they realized that dinner was never coming. Reddit user Leading-Knowledge712 shared the story of this experience on the weddingshaming subreddit, claiming that the wedding went from 3 PM to midnight. As they told Reddit in their post, ”Since the invitation said dinner would be served, and we were also told there would be lots of appetizers, my husband and I ate a light lunch then went.”
The Redditor alleged, “The first sign of trouble was when the waiters only brought out one or two trays of appetizers every 15 minutes or so to serve over 200 guests. The younger and more fit guests started congregating by the kitchen and swarming the waiters, so the food never made it the older and less fit guests. After a couple of hours of this, the guests started getting hangry and were practically fighting to get an occasional morsel of food. Sharp elbows were thrown!
The Redditor noted that they learned the truth after they “politely asked the bride’s mom what time dinner would be served.” They claimed, “She said that the dinner turned out to be too expensive so they were just doing the appetizers, and repeated the claim there would be lots of them. Turned out not to be true, so around 7pm my husband, I, and about 30 other ravenous guests went to a pizza place across the street to eat.”
Foraging at a wedding
The Redditor noted that multiple guests did the same thing, joked that the staff there were amazed by the rush of elegantly dressed people gobbling up mediocre pizza like “starving wolverines.” However, their solution did not go down well. The Redditor wrote, “Although we tried to discreet about the trip to pizza place, when we got back, we were tartly informed by the bride’s mom that it was very rude to leave the wedding.”
The night then took a turn for the worse. The Redditor alleged, “Later that night the groom’s grandmother actually fainted from hunger and an ambulance had to be called. Fortunately she was ok after a few hours of treatment in the ER.”
The original poster then wrapped up their post by wryly stating, “I felt we should have all gotten t-shirts saying that we’d survived the nearly food-less reception.” The poster doubled down on the humor with her post with the title, writing, “Hunger games wedding—we were promised dinner that was never served”
The community was scandalized, if rather amused. One user asked, “Did she think you were all hostages? You gotta eat.” Another commenter added, “It blows my mind anytime someone doesn’t prioritize food for a wedding. There are things you can cut from a wedding to stay in budget, food should NEVER be on that list.”
Interestingly, at a recent wedding, the bride allegedly planned a destination wedding with no food, and asked guests to cook for themselves. Some even suggested that the mother of the bride should have just had pizzas delivered to the venue instead of complaining about guests leaving.
In the comments, the original poster answered questions and told everyone that the wedding had alcohol in the form of cheap wine and premixed signature cocktails. They noted that they only returned to the venue after their pizza run because the husband was close friends with the groom’s family, who had no part in the planning. Even then, the groom’s mother was purportedly drunk and making snide remarks about the state of the wedding.
According to Vogue, weddings are marathons that require careful catering to keep guests going from the ceremony through the after-party. Experts like Marjorie Artieres of Pinch Food Design emphasize that food service should be a tool to create rhythm and flow. Wedding planner Tory Smith reportedly noted that while food can be a great place to showcase a couple’s personality, it is a non-negotiable element of hospitality.
Per Vogue, when planning, it is essential to consider the venue’s infrastructure and the needs of the guests. Even if a budget is tight, professionals suggest creative solutions like a drop-off from a local pizza joint or food truck, but that should be a planned indulgence rather than a last-minute scramble for starving guests. One recent bride who was dealing with a very tight budget chose to keep her guests fed with McDonald’s.
As one Reddit user aptly put it, “Expecting people to survive on appetizers for 7 hours should be a crime.” It is a reminder that when you host people for a major life event, you have a responsibility to provide for their basic comfort.
