Sony is set to host a beta program for the next PlayStation 4 firmware update, indicating that the system’s upcoming patch could be a significant one.

Taking to PlayStation Blog, the company confirmed that the registration is now open for those who wish to partake in the closed testing, which is primed to kick off in early March. Should you be accepted for the beta, participants will receive an email instructing them to download and install the new system software.

As Sony notes, users will encounter pre-release bugs and technical hiccups, and it’s really this participation that will help developers pinpoint any potential loopholes in the system software before it begins rolling out to the masses.

No word yet on the potential new features it’ll herald, though, with the PS Blog post simply stating that “more details on the new features you’ll be able to test” will be shared closer to the start time. Similarly to Xbox One’s Preview Program, Sony has encouraged would-be participants to consult the PlayStation Forums for further information about the beta program and the finer details of signing up.

PlayStation 4‘s latest – and seemingly rather hefty – firmware is inbound, and you can put it through its paces by signing up to Sony’s beta program.
