Fifty Shades of Grey director Sam Taylor-Johnson has closed a deal to direct Netflix’s ten-part thriller series Gypsy, according to Deadline.
In doing so, Taylor-Johnson will depart indie feature Chappaquiddick, with the outlet revealing that both pictures were originally competing for a summer shoot. Gypsy has won the tussle, however, and now the director has agreed to direct and executive produce the first two episodes of the series.
First hatched by Lisa Rubin, Netflix’s latest is billed as a psychological drama, one that orbits around Jean Holloway, a therapist “who begins to develop dangerous and intimate relationships with the people in her patients’ lives.” Rubin will oversee production on Gypsy as executive producer, alongside Sean Jablonski of Universal Television and Working Title.
Buoyed by the relative success of Master of None and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, this will mark the third collaboration between Universal TV and Netflix, and now that the pieces have fallen into place behind the lens – Tim Bevan, Liza Chasin and Eric Fellner are also involved in an exec. producing capacity – the companies will begin casting for the psychological thriller.
Netflix is aligning Gypsy with a premiere in early 2017, whereas Apex Entertainment’s Chappaquiddick will now cast the net in search of a new director to fill Taylor-Johnson’s place at the helm.
