CBS is continuing to round out the crack team behind its new Star Trek series in a big way, with news coming today that Nicholas Meyer — director of Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan and Star Trek writer in general — has been added to the TV reboot in both a writing and producing capacity. Besides Wrath Of Khan, Meyer wrote Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.
Meyer will back up recently-announced Star Trek showrunner Bryan Fuller (Pushing Daisies, Hannibal) on the new series, who himself has an early history writing on the sci-fi show. Fuller gave a brief comment on the announcement of Meyer’s addition to the series, recounting the staff’s “thrilled” excitement for the writer’s return:
“Nicholas Meyer chased Kirk and Khan ’round the Mutara Nebula and ’round Genesis’ flames, he saved the whales with the Enterprise and its crew, and waged war and peace between Klingons and the Federation,” Fuller said. “We are thrilled to announce that one of Star Trek’s greatest storytellers will be boldly returning as Nicholas Meyer beams aboard the new Trek writing staff.”
That’s two very good reasons to be excited for the new Star Trek coming early next year, but fans should remember that CBS’ new show will be available exclusively on CBS All Access (well, after the pilot debuts on the network earlier). No doubt hardcore fans will be willing to add yet another streaming subscription to their docket, but it’ll be interesting to see what the show’s reception and hype levels are for more casual viewers.
Those eagerly awaiting the small-screen return of Star Trek will at least have the third outing of the movie franchise, Star Trek Beyond, to tide them over this summer.
