As we continue to pick apart the shotgun blast of trailers, TV spots, snippets and set videos that premiered during the MTV Movie Awards, the latest teaser to emerge from Sunday’s ceremony hails from the 28th Century.

For in EuropaCorp’s weighty sci-fi feature Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, hot up-and-comers Cara Delevingne and Dane DeHaan will take to the stars as a pair of time-travelling agents bearing one key mission: to safeguard the remnants of humanity. Currently in the midst of production, today brings forth the first set video for the film (see below), showcasing the 2017 blockbuster in motion.

Now that we’ve glimpsed each star in their futuristic battle suits, we know that Delevingne and DeHaan will headline Luc Besson’s (The Fifth Element, Lucy) lavish tentpole as Laureline and Valérian, tasked with defending “a utopian 28th century Earth and its neighboring planets from bad guys, with the pair’s adventures rooted in space opera and time travel themes.”

Also on board for the galactic romp are Clive Owen, Rihanna, Ethan Hawke, John Goodman as a mysterious extra-terrestrial, Herbie Hancock, and Kris Wu. In fusing bleeding-edge CGI together with time-honoured sci-fi themes, it’s fair to say that Besson is aiming big with Valerian, possibly even aligning the new IP as a bona fide franchise. But will it be able to succeed where the likes of Jupiter Ascending failed?

Production marches on for Luc Besson’ sprawling sci-fi Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, and you’ll be able to see Cara Delevingne and Dane DeHaan in action when the feature drops from orbit on July 21, 2017.

Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are special operatives for the government of the human territories charged with maintaining order throughout the universe. Valerian has more in mind than a professional relationship with his partner- blatantly chasing after her with propositions of romance. But his extensive history with women, and her traditional values, drive Laureline to continuously rebuff him.
