This week has brought several updates concerning the long-awaited Sony/Marvel Spider-Man movie, thanks to the former studio’s sizeable presence at movie theater industry event CinemaCon. After months of rumors about the webslinger’s first standalone outing, it was confirmed by the latest incumbent – Tom Holland – that the first film in a new trilogy will be titled Spider-Man: Homecoming.

With speculation flying thick and fast concerning the film’s plot, we’re still relatively in the dark about what the teenage superhero will face in his third cinematic revival. Could the story be an adaptation of that same storyline from the comics? Only time will tell, but one aspect that’s certain is the inclusion of characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige recently confirmed the news, prompting many fans to wonder which Avengers might make the trip to Sony’s feature, and now Iron Man himself is stirring the pot.

During his appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night, Robert Downey Jr. addressed the possibility of popping up in Spidey’s solo flick. “Perhaps I will, we don’t have a contract yet,” said Downey Jr, coyly.

Despite his reluctance to give a straight answer, of all the Avengers, Tony Stark seems the one most likely to make an appearance. He is, after all, the one who reaches out to Peter Parker in Captain America: Civil War, so it makes sense that he would continue his relationship with the youngster. Either way, it sounds like the character is important to Downey Jr., as he went on to address how much the webhead means to him:

“You and I both grew up [with Spider-Man]. To me, Spider-Man, that was my whole deal…He was funny, he was cool, he was young like us.”

One of the highlights of Sony’s presentation earlier this week included an extended look at Spider-Man’s introduction in Civil War. That moment featured Holland, Downey Jr., and the latest actress to play Spider-Man’s Aunt May, Marisa Tomei. With an audience hanging on his every word, the actor took the opportunity to also throw in his two cents about Parker’s new guardian:

“She seemed ancient before and now she’s Marisa Tomei and he’s got a hot aunt,” added Downey Jr. “My god, just think of the possibilities.”

With production on Spidey’s new adventure gearing up shortly, we can expect to hear more reports – and hopefully an official confirmation – about Iron Man’s role in proceedings.

Spider-Man: Homecoming will fly into theaters on July 7, 2017. Before that, moviegoers will be introduced to Tom Holland’s take on the iconic character in next month’s Captain America: Civil War.
