It’s official: HBO has ordered new seasons of Game of Thrones, Veep and Silicon Valley ahead of the 2016-2017 TV season.
The announcement comes only a few days before the network’s flagship fantasy series Game of Thrones takes flight with season 6, though the fact that series showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have teased plans for smaller seasons beyond next week’s premiere – “[we’re] down to our final 13 episodes after this season” – means that GoT season 7 could be markedly shorter than those that have come before.
Here’s what Weiss had to share:
“That’s my understanding from them right now, those have been the conversations we’ve had. Because where these narratives go, it feels like another two years to them. As a television executive, as a fan, do I wish they said another six years? I do.”
In terms of Silicon Valley, HBO’s comedy series about a group of introverted computer programmers continues to pull in a relatively healthy audience. It’ll return next year for season 4 when series regulars Thomas Middleditch, T.J. Miller, Zach Woods, Kumail Nanjiani, Martin Starr, Josh Brener, and Amanda Crew are expected to return. For now, our review of season 3 heaped praise on HBO’s entertaining dramedy.
Lastly, partner series Veep also secured a renewal, ensuring that series stars Anna Chlumsky, Matt Walsh and Reid Scott will return in 2017. Before season 6 arrives, however, look for new episodes of the show to drop on Sunday.
Of the trio that have booked their place on HBO’s slate for 2017, it is Game of Thrones and Veep that will hit the small screen first on Sunday, April 24.
