Production continues today on the London set of Universal’s The Mummy, as the Tom Cruise-fronted reboot gears up to unleash a prophesy long foretold – the studio’s shared Monsters Universe.

Pegged to arrive in the summer of 2017, Alex Kurtzman’s long-gestating franchise overhaul will herald the beginning of a yearly cycle of creature features form the studio, with April 13, 2018 and February 15, 2019 currently occupied by untitled horror movies.

That leaves a hefty weight of expectation resting on the reanimated shoulders of Kurtzman’s reworked version of The Mummy; perhaps not on the level of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, but it is launching an interconnected universe nonetheless.

In a bid to stoke excitement ahead of release, Universal has today unveiled the film’s official synopsis, placing Sofia Boutella in the role of an “ancient queen” who is given a crude awakening.

Thought safely entombed in a crypt deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient queen (Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her, is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.

From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.

By the sounds of it, the Kingsman: The Secret Service breakout will be seeking vengeance once the lights go down on The Mummy, terrorizing a cast that also makes room for Cruise, Annabelle Wallis, New Girl‘s Jake Johnson, Marwan Kenzari, Courtney B. Vance and, potentially, Russell Crowe as Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde.

The Mummy conjures up an ancient magic when Universal’s franchise-starter opens on June 9, 2017.
