Jason Bourne Featurette Has Matt Damon Discuss His Defining Role

Matt Damon reflects on his defining role in new featurette for Universal's franchise refresh, Jason Bourne.

More than a decade ago, Matt Damon first took charge as Jason Bourne for The Bourne Identity in 2002, during a time when MGM’s Bond franchise was beginning to waver financially before the studio eventually drafted in series newcomer Daniel Craig to pick up the license to kill.

In those years that followed, a one-two punch of Supremacy and Ultimatum secured Bourne’s status as one of the best action series of the 21st century, informing many of its genre contemporaries – Bond included – thanks to its blistering editing and smart storytelling. One middling spinoff aside and there’s a crackle of excitement surrounding the release of this year’s new movie, which has been billed as the “biggest” Bourne movie to date.

That’s according to Matt Damon himself, who reflects on his “defining” role via a new Jason Bourne featurette. In it, the series stalwart takes us behind the scenes of the actioner, before touching base on his working relationship with Paul Greengrass – a Bourne stalwart himself.

On board for the next chapter in Universal’s action series are newcomers Tommy Lee Jones and the seemingly omnipresent Alicia Vikander. They’ll be joined by Julia Stiles, Vincent Cassel, Ato Essandoh, Scott Shepherd and Riz Ahmed in undisclosed roles.

Much to the CIA’s dismay, Jason Bourne emerge from the shadows with a full memory to boot when Universal’s franchise overhaul lands in theaters on July 29.

Matt Damon returns to his most iconic role in Jason Bourne. Paul Greengrass, the director of The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum, once again joins Damon for the next chapter of Universal Pictures’ Bourne franchise, which finds the CIA’s most lethal former operative drawn out of the shadows.
