The CW is putting all of its eggs in the Greg Berlanti basket, as today the network announced that it’s given a full series order to the producer’s live-action Archie Comics show Riverdale.
Set in the present day, the series is based on the well-known characters and locations of the Archie comics. Riverdale is described as “a surprising and subversive” representation of the characters and will delve into “the surrealism of small town life” and “the darkness and weirdness” – whatever that means – lurking beneath the surface of Riverdale.
The CW has also ordered No Tomorrow, a show about a straight-laced woman falling in love with a man who believes the apocalypse is coming, and Frequency, which is based on the somewhat forgotten Dennis Quaid thriller from 2000. In it, a police detective discovers she can speak to her dead father through a radio, and the two begin working together on a long-unsolved murder investigation.
Not only has The CW renewed its entire slate of programming from this season, and brought over a series from another network, but it’s now introducing three new shows into its fall lineup. It’ll be a busy year for fans, that’s for sure.
