Sony has announced plans to bring the gang back together in early 2017, when Renton, Sick Boy, Spud and Begbie all return for another bout of Scottish debauchery in Danny Boyle’s long-in-development sequel, Trainspotting 2.

It’s now on course to premiere Stateside on February 3 in select theaters, before expanding nationwide the following week on February 10. Word of T2 leaving the station emerged early this week, when Sony unveiled the sequel’s first teaser trailer – Choose life. Choose your future. Truth be told, it didn’t include any new footage for Trainspotting 2 itself, instead pulling from Danny Boyle’s jet-black comedy and effectively teeing up Renton and Co.’s long-awaited return.

Lifting inspiration from Irvine Welsh’s Porno, Danny Boyle’s follow-up is set to check in on our fearsome foursome ten years after the events that transpired in Edinburgh, which ended with Ewan McGregor’s Renton on a mission to live a relatively quiet and stable life.

Indeed, it was the quality of John Hodge’s screenplay that drew McGregor’s interest in the first place, who allayed fears that Boyle and the team are reuniting to make a quick buck.

“The script was really, really, really good. I think, if that had not happened, none of us would be into it. I think we’re all sort of somewhat protective of what Trainspotting means to people, and what it means to us. None of us want to make a poor sequel to it. So had we not been presented with the most extraordinary script, which we were, I think we wouldn’t be making the sequel. But because we were, we are.”

Trainspotting 2 pulls into the station on February 10, 2017 for those in the States. Across the pond, meanwhile, Danny Boyle’s sequel debuts a little earlier on January 27.
