Gearing up to unleash its summer reboot upon the masses in only two months’ time, Sony Pictures has today conjured up the all-new (and much improved) trailer for Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters, showcasing Slime, Proton Packs and a series icon in the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.
Anchoring the paranormal action as Sony’s new Busters are Melissa McCarthy – reteaming with Feig following Bridesmaids and last year’s pleasent surprise, Spy – Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon, who will be joined by their trusty new recruit, Chris Hemsworth.
Today’s trailer, while exciting and intriguing, does nail down a few key plot points underpinning Ghostbusters, so if you’re hoping to go into the theatre with a relatively clean slate, it’d be best to avoid this new sizzle reel.
Holding a device capable of amplifying supernatural activity across New York City, it is Saturday Night Live veteran Neil Casey that takes point as Rowan, a strange and mysterious New Yorker that wants nothing more than to ensnare ghosts from beyond our realm for “a different purpose. Teasing the villain’s character traits, Paul Feig told Empire recently that “Rowan is the ultimate loner, a regular New Yorker whose goal is to bring some things back to this world. He wants to trap ghosts, but for a different purpose…”
Hoping to prove they ain’t afraid of no ghost, Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon will light up the streets of NYC as the new Ghostbusters when Paul Feig’s blockbuster lands on July 15.
Erin Gilbert (Wiig) and Abby Yates (McCarthy) are a pair of unheralded authors who write a book positing that ghosts are real. A few years later Gilbert lands a prestigious teaching position at Columbia University, but her book resurfaces and she is laughed out of academia. Gilbert reunites with Yates and others when ghosts invade Manhattan and she and her team have to save the world.
