Almost two months on from the controversial finale to season 6, The Walking Dead founding father Robert Kirkman has addressed the backlash directed at the episode.

Indeed, this is not the first time that Kirkman has weighed in on the impassioned reaction to the scene in question, which teed up a defining meeting between Negan (Jeffery Dean Morgan) and Rick’s small crew of survivors.

Given the character’s reputation with The Walking Dead fans, it was nigh on certain that the introduction of Negan and his nightmarish weapon of choice – bearing the name Lucille – would result in one of the show’s leads meeting their maker, but the way in which said scene was executed proved to be the topic of heated debate online.

However, in an interview with /Film, Kirkman revealed that he was happy with how the season 6 finale panned out. Dancing around spoilers, here’s what the comic book scribe and executive producer had to share:

“I was very flattered by all of the response that we got,” Kirkman said. “It shows that people are still invested. I think the negativity surrounding that was unfortunate but I think people have been watching the show for six years and they’re entitled to their opinion. I’m happy with how things went and I know that we’ve got a great season seven coming up so it’s going to be cool.”
