Final Fantasy XIV producer Naoki Yoshida has told Game Watch (via VG247) in a recent interview that the first details for the MMO’s second expansion will be revealed at this year’s Fan Festival in Las Vegas. Yoshida says that the event, which will be held in October, will always be the place where he and the development team “share the biggest news,” adding (when asked if they would announce a new expansion there) that:

That’s right. This is a game that is supported by many players, so we’d like to share the biggest news together with the fans at the Fan Festival meetings.

Additionally, Yoshida was quizzed on what players can expect to see for the remainder of the patch 3.0 series, which began with last year’s Heavensward expansion, and how long it will continue to receive patches.

I believe that we’ll see the big changes starting with Patch 3.5. Similar to what we had in Patch 2.5 and 2.55, which I believe was a big pivot. We’ll definitely have up until Patch 3.5. I can’t say anymore than that.

If you’re hoping for some firm details regarding where the next expansion will be set or what the narrative will entail, Yoshida says he wants to avoid spoilers and save all the details for the Fan Festivals later this year and early next year.

Since there’d be spoilers, I can’t say anything about the story, but we’ll see more on it during Fan Festival announcements, and in a way through the main story.

Final Fantasy XIV‘s most recent patch, Revenge of the Horde, was released earlier this month and features the conclusion of the so-called ‘Dragonsong War.’ Square Enix has also recently indicated that they’re in talks with Microsoft to bring the game to Xbox One.
