Several attempts have been made to resurrect Lost in Space, but it’s Netflix that is moving forward with a new take on the property. In fact, the online streaming service has given it a straight to series 1o episode order as they take aim at a premiere in 2018. It’s said to be part of their plans for more “four-quadrant family entertainment.”
Making the news official today, Cindy Holland, VP Original Content at Netflix said:
“The original series so deftly captured both drama and comedy, and that made it very appealing to a broad audience. The current creative team’s reimagining of the series for Netflix is sure to appeal to both fans who fondly remember the original and to create a new generation of enthusiasts around the world.”
The new Lost In Space has been described as an epic but grounded science fiction saga focusing on a young explorer family from Earth lost in an alien universe and the challenges they face in staying together against seemingly insurmountable odds. Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless (Dracula Untold) are writing, while Neil Marshall (Game of Thrones) is expected to direct.
Lost in Space aired for three seasons after debuting in 1965, lasting for a total of 83 episodes before it was cancelled amid declining ratings and a rapidly increasing budget. An attempt was made to bring the property to the big screen in 1998, and, well, that didn’t exactly live up to the expectations of fans. Here’s hoping this version fares a little better, eh?
