With its impressive, Inception-esque CGI and shots of realities unfolding like origami, Doctor Strange‘s most recent trailer drove home the point that, yes, Marvel’s latest spinoff is poised to steer the MCU into the Quantum Realm and beyond.
Echoing that overarching narrative was director Scott Derrickson, who solicited questions during a panel at last weekend’s San Diego Comic-Con.
It was here where the filmmaker touched base on the inherent themes of spiritualism and mysticism that will underpin the upcoming offshoot, and why Doctor Strange can herald the beginning of the Marvel Cinematic Multiverse. Mark it, folks.
“What the comics did was, they brought with Doctor Strange an extra dimension into psychedelia, mysticism, and spirituality and all these very 60’s things and broke open the Marvel comic book universe into the Marvel multiverse. I think Doctor Strange is going to be the beginning of the Marvel Cinematic Multiverse. It’s really serving the same function that the comic did. Even though it was a weird aberration as a comic book, I think it was a real linchpin in the comics. It ended up being decades of new stories and I think this movie will do the same thing.”
Rubbing shoulders with Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Michael Stuhlbarg, Mads Mikkelsen and Tilda Swinton, Benedict Cumberbatch will lead the charge as Marvel’s Sorcerer Supreme in only a few months’ time.
Interestingly, the eagle eyes over at MCU Exchange have spotted a casting credit for Benjamin Bratt. Best known for his role on NBC procedural Law & Order, could Bratt be playing henchman to Mikkelsen’s Kaecilius? Or someone else entirely?
Doctor Strange will light up theaters across the globe on November 4.
