Confirming those early rumors to be bang on point, Marvel took to the stage at San Diego Comic-Con to introduce Brie Larson as Captain Marvel.

Inundated with fan support and messages of encouragement, the Room breakout – who will soon be going up against the biggest King Kong to ever grace the big screen in early 2017 –  has proven to be a popular choice for the role, and has even attracted praise from esteemed comic book scribe Kelly Sue DeConnick.

Word comes by way of Vanity Fair, who spoke with DeConnick about the casting announcement. For the sake of context, the writer was instrumental in transitioning Carol Danvers from Miss Marvel to the Captain Marvel we know and live circa 2012, and now, DeConnick considers Brie Larson to be “dream casting” for the title role.

“My dream casting—or the actor who is the voice in my head—is Kathleen Turner from about 1983. She could be both sexy and awkward and powerful. She could do all of those things at once. From what I can tell, Brie Larson can do those things too. She has a gravitas and she has a power to her. But you can see she also has a sense of humor and playfulness there. I’m psyched.

The only physical thing I wanted for Carol—I was hoping for Carol to have some height. In the books she’s five-foot-eleven. There’s a little bit of an intimidation factor that comes with her being so tall.”

Elsewhere, DeConnick expressed her desire to see Brie Larson donning the famous Captain Marvel helmet come 2018.

“I love the helmet! That is not a universal opinion. After we left the book, they got rid of the helmet. I have a lot of boring continuity arguments on the history of the helmet and a list of reasons as to why the helmet exists. I want the helmet!”

Captain Marvel is currently pegged for release on March 8, 2019.
