The last scene of the season 3 finale of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. brought with it a few surprising revelations. After a short flash-forward it came to light that Daisy was actually on the run from her former teammates, and Phil Coulson was no longer the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Fans figured another established character (most likely Agent May) must have been promoted in his stead, but it turns out the new Director will actually be a brand new character, as played by Irish actor Jason O’Mara (Life of Mars, Terra Nova).

Here’s what Marvel TV boss Jeph Loeb had to say about the casting:

Bringing Jason into the mix as the New Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. forces everyone, particularly Coulson, to reevaluate their role in the Agency. Jason has both the physical presence and acting dynamics that will connect with and challenge even the most loyal agent.

Though his name isn’t revealed, we do know that O’Mara will be playing “a character whose Marvel roots go back to the 1940s,” so it’s time to get speculating.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns for its fourth (and possibly final) season on Tuesday, September 20th in the new timeslot of 10:00 PM ET on ABC.
