Boasting the jaw-dropping spectacle of big-name blockbusters (read: Inception) and a wry, charismatic lead in Benedict Cumberbatch, it’s little wonder why Doctor Strange is arresting attention across the board ahead of its November bow.
Couple those exciting tidbits with the fact that Scott Derrickson’s spellbinding origin story is set to introduce the Multiverse and you have one of the most intriguing releases of the year – and not just in terms of comic book movies.
Shedding new light on Marvel’s Sorcerer Supreme, Movie Freak has unearthed high-res trailer screenshots (via CBM) that showcase Cumberbatch’s good doctor going to work.
[zerg]When it comes to the proposition of delving deep into the Multiverse, director Scott Derrickson spoke recently about toying with expectations, and how Doctor Strange could herald the advent of the Marvel Cinematic Multiverse.
“What the comics did was, they brought with Doctor Strange an extra dimension into psychedelia, mysticism, and spirituality and all these very 60’s things and broke open the Marvel comic book universe into the Marvel multiverse. I think Doctor Strange is going to be the beginning of the Marvel Cinematic Multiverse. It’s really serving the same function that the comic did. Even though it was a weird aberration as a comic book, I think it was a real linchpin in the comics. It ended up being decades of new stories and I think this movie will do the same thing.”
Joining Cumberbatch for that mind-bending journey are Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Michael Stuhlbarg, Mads Mikkelsen, Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One and, as we learned recently, Benjamin Bratt in an undisclosed role.
Opening in the crowded corridor of November 4 – which also sees the release of Trolls, Bleed for This, Loving and Mel Gibson war drama Hacksaw Ridge – Doctor Strange will introduce the MCU to the Multiverse.
Marvel’s Doctor Strange follows the story of the talented neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a tragic car accident, must put ego aside and learn the secrets of a hidden world of mysticism and alternate dimensions. Based in New York City’s Greenwich Village, Doctor Strange must act as an intermediary between the real world and what lies beyond, utilizing a vast array of metaphysical abilities and artifacts to protect the Marvel cinematic universe.
