It was only yesterday that we learned Merlin star Katie McGrath will play Lena Luthor in the upcoming second season of Supergirl, but some new set photos have now arrived that offer up a first look at the actress in character. Unlike her comic book counterpart, Lena isn’t confined to a wheelchair, but that’s something which could obviously still happen somewhere down the line.

In the photos, we see Alex Danvers being held hostage by a mysterious gunman dressed as a cop as Supergirl watches on. It’s then that Lena shoots him and possibly wins their trust.

Here’s the official description of the character, which makes it sound as if Supergirl will be teasing her villainous nature.

“Beautiful, powerful, and enigmatic, Lena arrives in National City on the heels of brother Lex’s incarceration hoping for a fresh start. Lena has taken over as CEO of her family’s billion-dollar-tech company, Luthor Corp, which has been tarnished by Lex’s evil infamy. Her goal? To re-brand the empire as a force for good. Lena wants to be seen as her own person, separate from her brother. Kara is drawn into Lena’s sphere and must determine if she is friend or foe.”

It definitely seems like Lena will be taking on the role played by Maxwell Lord in the first season, and that’s no bad thing when you take into account what an underwhelming presence he was, as the character constantly flirted between being a hero and villain.

Given her ties to her brother Lex and Superman’s presence in Supergirl‘s second season, it should be very interesting seeing how Lena ends up playing into The CW series moving forward.
