It doesn’t give away much in terms of story details, but fans of Smith’s career – and Superman in particular – should instantly recognize it.

“Andrew Kreisberg told me that the name of the episode is ‘Supergirl Lives.’ I’m gonna cry talking about this. The name of the script I wrote back in 1996 was called ‘Superman Lives.'”

Smith is of course referring to the unmade Superman Lives, a movie which would have starred Nicolas Cage as the Man of Steel with Batman helmer Tim Burton at the helm. At the time, Smith was hired by producer Jon Peters to pen the screenplay, but before he could start, the relative newcomer was tasked with some very odd requests (like a massive spider for Supes to battle).

Unsurprisingly, that never happened, but the fact that this episode of Supergirl references the project is a fun in joke for fans. Of course, it will be particularly interesting to see if the script finds any other ways to reference the movie, but either way, it’s going to be great having Smith bring his talents to the world of Kara Danvers in the near future.
