Teddy Sears May Very Well Return As Black Flash

When Zoom met his downfall during the Season 2 finale of The Flash, not everybody seemed to notice the many subtleties of his transformation upon being attacked by Time Wraiths - some people I know certainly didn't. The obvious change was in his skin, which no longer maintains much of a silky smooth quality. Those who blinked, however, may have neglected to see his lightning change from blue to red, as well as his logo changing to white and red, among other minor costume alterations.

When Zoom met his downfall during the season 2 finale of The Flash, not everybody seemed to notice the many subtleties of his transformation upon being attacked by Time Wraiths – some people I know certainly didn’t. Those who blinked, however, may have neglected to see his lightning change from blue to red, as well as his logo changing to white and red, among other minor costume alterations.

Long story short, Hunter Zolomon has now taken on the persona of Black Flash, a character who is essentially Death when it comes to speedsters. This likeness has been adopted by a variety of people in the comics and, although the TV show is likely taking some liberties, I highly doubt many people will complain because the end result is usually pretty stellar when it comes to The Flash.

Executive producer Andrew Kreisberg recently shed some light on the subject when speaking to Entertainment Weekly, and here’s what he had to say:

“Obviously we did that on purpose. We love working with Teddy [Sears]. He’s such an amazing actor and amazing person, and was so much a part of the success of this show last season. There aren’t any immediate plans for that, but you can’t keep a good Black Flash down, so I’m sure we’ll be seeing him in the future.”

It’s certainly not uncommon for an actor to return when producers and fans become attached to them, even when their character has seemingly “died.” An example from this very show would be Tom Cavanagh returning as Earth 2’s Harrison Wells after his original character – Eobard Thawne/The Reverse Flash – met his end during the first season’s finale.

Despite there being no “immediate plans” for Black Flash, I wouldn’t rule out his return during the latter portion of the third season. After all, both Tom Cavanagh and Matt Letscher returned as the respective faces of Eobard Thawne around that very point during season 2. Although the prospect of seeing Black Flash again is awesome, one can only hope viewers don’t experience evil speedster fatigue, especially with Savitar functioning as one of the upcoming season’s big bads.

The Flash returns for its third season on Tuesday, October 4 on The CW.
