Gotham Showrunner Claims That Superheroes “Don’t Work Well On TV”

Even before the series premiere of Gotham aired, comic book fans questioned whether or not Bruno Heller was a good fit to serve as showrunner. Many of his comments pointed to a lack of understanding when it comes to the source material, and while there's no denying the show has been a success (season three airs this Fall), it still upsets a lot of Batman fans.

Even before the series premiere of Gotham aired, comic book fans questioned whether or not Bruno Heller was a good fit to serve as showrunner. Many of his comments pointed to a lack of understanding when it comes to the source material, and while there’s no denying the show has been a success (season three airs this Fall), it still upsets a lot of Batman fans.

Now, Heller has made some very controversial comments about comic book adaptations on television, saying at the Edinburgh Television Festival that superheroes aren’t really suited to the small screen.

Wait, what?

“I don’t think superheroes work very well on TV. Probably because of the costume thing,” said Heller.

To call these comments ridiculous would be an understatement. The likes of Arrow, The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow are far more popular and critically acclaimed that Gotham, while Daredevil is leaps and bounds ahead of the series in almost every respect and that show’s lead wears a red costume with horns!

It’s also worth noting that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. – which features even less superhero costumes than Gotham – has struggled in terms of ratings, a sign perhaps that audiences are quicker to embrace more traditional superhero fare on the small screen than grounded shows which go out of their way not to touch on that type of thing.

Tell us, do you think Gotham‘s showrunner is on to something here, or are his comments way off base? Sound off below and let us know!
