Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers will be heading to the big screen in 2018, but what of the young hero that inherited the mantle of Ms. Marvel in the Marvel Comics Universe? Kamala Khan’s popularity has skyrocketed since her introduction back in 2013, and for that reason alone there’s previously been some chatter about the possibility of a Ms. Marvel TV series – but now, we might just have something a little more substantial to go on.
During an interview with CBR, Marvel Chief Operating Officer, Joe Quesada, admits that the fans do influence some of the decisions when it comes to choosing which comic book characters to utilize for their live-action projects, and all-but promises that we will be seeing Kamala crossover into “other media” at some point.
“Our readers are the Johnny Appleseeds. They tell us something is resonating, something is hitting a core, and that’s something we should try to cultivate. Another great example of this: Ms. Marvel. If we had put this book out ten years ago, it probably would never have succeeded. Not only did we find the audience, but we had the right people on the book and we had the right editor on the book, the right creators on the book. And now we have a character that’s very recognizable — very, very quickly.
That doesn’t happen a lot. Who knows where Ms. Marvel’s going to end up. You can be sure that, somewhere down the road, she will be a part of the future of Marvel in other media.”
Obviously, this doesn’t mean Marvel has anything in the pipeline currently, but it is nice to have confirmation that Miss Khan is on their radar, at the very least. The only question is, would it be a film or a TV series? The latter is more likely (could we see Ms. Marvel join The New Warriors, perhaps?), but it’ll probably be a while before we hear anything official one way or the other.
