The fourth season of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. continues with a new episode on Tuesday night, but fans are still debating a lot of the questions raised in last week’s season premiere – in particular, the rather explosive first meeting between two characters we’ve been told will actually wind up on the same side at some point: Daisy/Quake (Chloe Bennet) and Robbie Reyes/Ghost Rider (Gabriel Luna).

When Daisy tracked Reyes to his junkyard, the two engaged in a pretty fierce battle, which ended with the troubled Inhuman at the mercy of the Spirit of Vengeance – but the fiery entity chose to spare Daisy’s life, even after she practically begged him to finish her off.

Marvel Comics fans will likely know why this was, but Luna clarified things for more casual viewers during a new interview with Entertainment Weekly:

He saw a penitent women. He looked into her eyes and saw a woman who is obviously trying to atone for something, but it’s definitely nothing that she did. The Rider has the ability to see through and into the bones of someone — into their heart and their soul. He sees a woman trying to be good.

Given the opportunity, I didn’t kill her. So she’s intrigued by this creature that she witnessed. Beyond that, we’re all heading in the same direction. We all funnel into this one road. While you can’t call us a team, we’re certainly aligned, but it’s mainly because we’re all seeking the same thing.

Exactly what that is remains to be seen, but as this promo for the next installment makes very clear, these two are going to come to blows at least once more before finding any sort of common ground.

Tune in to the next episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 4 tomorrow night to see how it all plays out.
