Developer Red Barrels has no intention of introducing VR support to 2017 horror sequel Outlast 2 – not at launch, at least.
Word comes by way of PlayStation LifeStyle, where President Philippe Morin noted that because Outlast 2 wasn’t designed from the ground up to be playable in virtual reality – be that via HTC Vive, the Oculus Rift or PlayStation VR – Red Barrels is focusing solely on the core experience.
A first-person horror title though it may be, and therefore a fine candidate to be overhauled into a nerve-shredding virtual reality experience, Morin points out that at 20 people, Red Barrels is relatively small development team. Couple this with the studio’s recent decision to delay Outlast 2 in the name of polish and it’s clear the prospect of VR support is very much on the back-burner.

No, it won’t be. I think that if you want to make a really effective and enjoyable VR game, it has to be built from the ground up for it. Since, we’re a small team of 20 people, we have to focus on one thing at a time. We’ll see once we ship Outlast 2 if we jump on the VR bandwagon.
Recently pushed out of its tentative 2016 release window, Outlast 2 is now on course to claw its way onto PS4, Xbox One and PC next year. To cushion the blow, a playable demo of the horror follow-up is available on PSN, Xbox Live and Steam until Tuesday, November 1, lending you plenty of nightmare fuel in time for Halloween – VR or no.
