With Beyond Good & Evil 2 now officially confirmed as being in development thanks to series creator Michel Ancel and Ubisoft themselves, talk has subsequently turned to how the long awaited follow-up to the 2003 original will fit into the series’ chronology and, perhaps more importantly, which platforms it will appear on.
Previous rumors had suggested that the action-adventure title would see a release exclusively on Nintendo’s mystery NX console and, according to a new report by LetsPlayVideoGames.com (via Nintendo Life), that’s looking like an increasingly likely prospect.
According to the site, a source “familiar with negotiations on the project” has let slip that, rather than being a direct sequel to the original, Beyond Good & Evil 2 will “partially retell Jade’s origin tale from Beyond Good & Evil, flesh out Peyj’s backstory, then continue to extrapolate on the ending of the original game.”
What’s more, the sequel won’t be a numbered one, and will instead “feature a subtitle rather than a number at the end of its title.” Ultimately, the source explains that Ancel and Ubisoft want to give players who never played the original an easier method of entry to the overarching narrative, and a partial reboot is the best way to accommodate for both them and existing fans.
Separate to the above, another source has told the site that the sequel will in fact be an NX exclusive and be present by way of a CG trailer at the system’s reveal event.
While aligning with previous reports that have made similar claims, we can only take all of the above with a pinch of salt until Nintendo or Ubisoft make any of it official. With that said, the latter company has been very public in its support of Nintendo’s upcoming device, so don’t be too surprised if the report turns out to be accurate.
