Stephen Strange, the visionary neurosurgeon who is equal parts brilliant and arrogant, begins his quest to become Marvel’s Sorcerer Supreme in this stunning batch of screenshots for Doctor Strange.

Left circling the jaws of depression after an accident leaves him without any control over his hands – and, by effect, his life’s work – Benedict Cumberbatch’s lead character dumps his fortune into finding a cure, but to no avail. Out of luck and out of options, Strange begins his pilgrimage east where he encounters Tilda Swinton’s Ancient One, and it’s here that Scott Derrickson’s origin story really kicks into gear.

As a budding sorcerer, previous trailers have showcased the arduous training regime that awaits Cumberbatch’s title superhero. Slowly but surely, he learns the tricks of the trade, eventually tapping into the power of both the Eye of Agamotto (the Time Stone?) and the sleek Cloak of Levitation.

Clocking in at under two hours in length, excitement for Doctor Strange has spread across the four corners of the Internet. Can it emulate the respective triumphs of both Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man – two films labelled big risks in 2014 and 2015 – and introduce Marvel’s Sorcerer Supreme in convincing fashion? We’ll see. Then again, the end-credits sequence indicates that the studio is fairly confident that Derrickson’s pic has what it takes to become a bona fide hit, potentially even spawning a sequel in the process.

Doctor Strange will make his long-awaited debut in the UK on October 25, at which point James Mangold and the Powers That Be at Fox will lift the lid on the first teaser trailer for Logan. Scott Derrickson’s standalone pic will then land on these shores come November 4.
