Doctor Strange is yet to hit theaters on these shores and already director Scott Derrickson is dreaming up ideas for the inevitable sequel. He’s not the only one either, after Tilda Swinton expressed her burning desire to headline a prequel movie revolving around The Ancient One.

No development on that front as yet, but when it comes to Derrickson, despite the fact Marvel’s Sorcerer Supreme is little over a week away from his grand debut, the filmmaker is eager to delve back into the rich lore surrounding Doctor Strange. If the opportunity of a sequel presents itself, and assuming Marvel sticks to its guns and keeps Derrickson on at the helm, the director told Den of Geek that the follow-up would be a “more visceral experience” in the vein of The Dark Knight.

What made The Dark Knight so great was that the origin story of Batman had been well-told, and then it was time to bring in a villain where you really got to go deep. And not just the Joker, also Two-Face. It was a more visceral experience, I’d love to be able to do that for Doctor Strange.

Thanks to the end-credits sequence included in Doctor Strange, we know that it is Baron Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) who will emerge as one of the major antagonists going forward, channeling the powerful magic used by Benjamin Bratt’s character in the process. There are more possibilities beyond Mordo, of course, and Derrickson even went so far as to say that the imminent origin story is only the “tip of an iceberg.”

I love the character, I love the visual possibilities, and I know the comics so well – [the first movie is] the tip of an iceberg. There’s so much progress that can be made.

Doctor Strange lands on November 4. Curious to know more about the Sorcerer Supreme ahead of release? Look no further than our in-depth guide for the MCU’s latest newcomer.
