Forget Shepard; with Andromeda, BioWare is shifting the focus over to a new protagonist called Ryder – male or female, depending on your preference – also known as the Pathfinder. We also get a fleeting look at the alien menace set to wreak havoc across the galaxy, making for some truly eye-popping spectacle.

Elsewhere, Mass Effect: Andromeda has been confirmed as the cover star of Game Informer‘s new issue, meaning we can expect new details – voice cast, loyalty missions and more – to emerge sooner rather than later. Until then, here’s the official description:

Mass Effect: Andromeda takes players to the Andromeda galaxy, far beyond the Milky Way. There, players will lead our fight for a new home in hostile territory as the Pathfinder-a leader of military-trained explorers. This is the story of humanity’s next chapter, and player choices throughout the game will ultimately determine our survival.

If you’re eager to catch up on BioWare’s sci-fi yarn in time for Andromeda, you’re in luck – you’ll just need to own an Xbox One. That’s because, according to Microsoft Director of Programming Larry Hryb, both Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3 will be coming to the current-gen system today via the platform’s backward compatibility feature.

Mass Effect: Andromeda has been earmarked for launch across PS4, Xbox One and PC in spring 2017. Expect BioWare to premiere our first look at gameplay during The Game Awards 2016 next month, but can we expect a release date to conicide with the unveiling? We’ll find out soon.
