Ubisoft Reportedly Hosting Talks With Netflix For Licensed Series

Presiding over a roster of IP that includes the likes of Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, Watch Dogs and more, Ubisoft is arguably one of the few video game publishers with the necessary resources to repackage those properties into cinematic blockbusters. It’s a strategy that the French giant plans to go all-in on, too, founding Ubisoft Motion Pictures to help foster the likes of Justin Kurzel’s Assassin’s Creed and a live-action spin on The Division.

According to Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot, the company is now “in talks with Netflix over a series.” Word comes by way of a Reuters report, though Guillemot stopped short of mentioning which of Ubi’s franchises are in contention for the small-screen treatment.

With both Assassin’s Creed and The Division headed to the big screen – a Tom Hardy-fronted Splinter Cell movie is also gestating in production – we’re inclined to believe that Ubisoft is readying either Far Cry, Watch Dogs or even South Park for the serialized format. It’s merely conjecture, of course, but we’ll be keeping track of this one as more information comes to light.

For the sake of comparison, fellow video game publisher Activision recently partnered with Netflix for a Skylanders animated show. Entitled Skylanders Academy, it marks the online streamer’s first property to be based on a video game, though judging by Guillemot’s comments, it certainly won’t be the last.

Assassin’s Creed, meanwhile, will look to jump-start a newfound historical franchise for both Ubisoft Motion Pictures and New Regency when the Michael Fassbender-led actioner dives into theaters on December 21.
