Steve James’ remix of “Kisses Back” differs quite a bit from the original, with the producer opting to craft an entirely new backdrop around Matthew Koma’s recognizable tenor. The new version opens with a somber chord progression as the song’s topline melodies fill the speakers, before James works in some gradually building drum patterns. From there, he infuses the drops with chopped and screwed vocal samples layered over rolling trap rhythms.

The new remix scores points for delivering a fresh production that truly recreates the song from the bottom up. Steve James makes prominent use of Matthew Koma‘s catchy vocal hooks while offering up a rework that gives the original a complete makeover, and his version of “Kisses Back” brings plenty to the table.
