Irish UFC fighter Conor McGregor is reportedly set to feature in Game of Thrones, according to a source close to The Sunday Life.

It’s unclear as yet whether the two-weight world champion will appear in next year’s season 7 or the eighth – and indeed final – season of HBO’s fantasy flagship, but the outlet claims McGregor was effectively “headhunted” by the network after GoT directors deemed him the “perfect fit for the show.” Incidentally, Conor McGregor was pictured in Belfast just last week, and the fact that the city has become a hub for all things Game of Thrones over the past few years leads us to believe that there could be more to this story than simple tabloid gossip.

Per The Sunday Life: “It’s been agreed that McGregor will appear in one of the remaining two seasons of Game of Thrones. He was headhunted as it were by HBO, as one of the Game of Thrones directors is a huge UFC fan. They believed that he would be a perfect fit for the show.”

McGregor, meanwhile, is no stranger to the cast of HBO’s series. Not only has the MMA fighter sparred with Hafþór Júlíus “Thor” Björnsson – better known to you, I and the late Oberyn Martell as The Mountain – but McGregor recently featured opposite Kit Harington in this year’s Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. Could a reunion be in the cards? We’ll keep you posted as this one develops.

With Westworld now on the back-burner at HBO until 2018, next year very much belongs to Game of Thrones. It’ll return for a seventh, truncated season mid-way through 2017.
