The search for a Captain Marvel director marches on, but according to Variety’s Justin Kroll, Marvel may well be ready to nominate its chosen candidate in the new year. Taking to Twitter, Kroll revealed that the Powers That Be are currently in the process of assembling the movie’s first script treatment, before plans are made to meet with a handful of potential directors and begin negotiations.

No mention of who those particular candidates could be – the shortlist has been whittled down to three, it seems – however, we understand that the so-hot-right now Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Meg LeFauve (Inside Out) are behind the newest iteration of the Captain Marvel screenplay. Together, they’re cooking up an origin story, one that will seemingly be tweaked in its journey to the big screen so as to avoid retreading the same story explored by DC’s Green Lantern solo movie five years ago.

Truth be told, Carol Danvers’ journey to the silver screen has been a long and meandering one, but this fleeting status report certainly bodes well for future announcements. Last we reported, Niki Caro, Lorene Scafaria and Homeland‘s Lesli Linka Glatter were said to be in contention for the Captain Marvel gig, though it’s impossible to tell whether their names still hold a place on the studio’s shortlist. Marvel has earned the benefit of the doubt over the years when it comes to drafting filmmakers into the MCU – think Jon Favreau or Kenneth Branagh or the Russo brothers – so we’ll just have to hunker down and await further information.

Captain Marvel is tentatively slated for March 8, 2019. Kroll’s report indicates that the studio may well be ready to announce a director in early 2017, so stay tuned for more.
