Homeland Season 6 Trailer Addresses Post-Election Tension

At a time when phrases such as ‘post-truth’ are being normalised across mainstream media, is it possible for a show like Homeland to be too ‘on-the-nose’? Not really, but Showtime is going to try its best. A new trailer for the upcoming sixth season of Homeland sets out the latest challenge facing the formidable Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) – a tension-filled period between Presidential election and inauguration, during which the President-Elect threatens the CIA.

“After she thwarted a terrorist attack in Berlin, season six picks up several months later and finds Carrie Mathison (Danes) back on American soil, living in Brooklyn, New York. She has begun working at a foundation whose efforts are to provide aid to Muslims living in the U.S. Season six will tackle the after effects of the U.S. presidential election, with the entire season taking place between election day and the inauguration. It’s a strange, transitional time in the halls of government filled with anxiety and different competing interests, where a very fragile and complex transfer of power takes place between the outgoing president and the incoming president-elect.”

It’s interesting to see the shift in perspective here, given that the show has been heavily criticized for its portrayal of the Islamic faith in the past. Now, Carrie Mathison is literally working to provide aid for Muslim people on American soil, and it’s the shadowy intentions and motivations of those seeking and clinging to power in the corridors of Washington that point to the true villains of this piece.

Homeland returns to Showtime on January 15th, 2017 for its sixth season. Will you be tuning in?
