It hasn’t been any easy journey for It, the newest Stephen King adaptation that once found Cary Fukunaga (True Detective season 1) and the Duffer Brothers (Netflix’s Stranger Things) involved in some capacity before the job went to director Andy Muschietti (Mama). Currently in post-production, Pennywise the Clown will soon scares audiences everywhere when he creeps into theatres next year. Thanks to an unsettling design by makeup effects artist Tom Woodruff, It finds Bill Skarsgård taking on the titular role that was once played by Tim Curry in the infamous 1990 TV miniseries. Naturally, it takes a lot to be creepier than that legendary take on the character, but Muschietti’s new version looks like it’s going to give the original a run for its money. Joining Skarsgård in this updated take will be Jaeden Lieberher, Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things), newcomer Sophia Lillis, Jack Dylan Grazer, Wyatt Oleff, Chosen Jacobs and Jeremy Ray Taylor.
Similar to the 1986 book of the same name, It tells the story of seven children terrorized by an eponymous being, one that exploits the fears and phobias of its victims in order to disguise itself while hunting for its prey. In order to attract its preferred prey of young children, “It” primarily takes the form of a clown.
Envisioned as two films, It will release its first part on September 8, 2017, which is set in the 1980s and focuses on the “Loser Club,” the group of kids who band together to battle the terrifying monster. The second film takes place thirty years later, in modern times, when It returns and the Loser Club must band together, yet again, to try to destroy the monster once and for all.
