Hugh Dancy Weighs In On When Hannibal Could Return To Television

One of the biggest losses in recent memory when it comes to TV cancellations has to be Hannibal. After three incredible seasons, the show came to a premature end with a series finale which very much left the door open for some sort of return, and while there’s been talk of that possibly happening, we’ve heard nothing even remotely concrete.

Given the show’s poor performance in terms of ratings, perhaps that shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise, but there’s a very real desire for Hannibal to return amongst both fans and those involved with the series, which starred Mads Mikkelsen and Hugh Dancy. Now, the latter has weighed in on when he thinks it could make its eventual return.

“My feeling is that, knock on wood, if it came around again, it wouldn’t be a bad thing for it to be four or five years later. That might actually be kind of interesting. How weird would that be, on a personal level, to find yourself back with those people? ‘So… where did we leave off? It’s such a strange idea, but it’s potentially very healthy for a story like that. So we’ll see.”

That definitely sounds like an interesting approach, and it would no doubt be fascinating to pick up with these characters a few years down the line rather than immediately after that big cliffhanger ending. Asked for his thoughts on showrunner Bryan Fuller’s comments that he would like to tackle Silence of the Lambs, Dancy added:

“I know where we stood at the end of season 3, in terms of what he was thinking about. And it did reflect some elements of Silence of the Lambs… He loves that source material, as he would tell you.”

What the future holds in store for Hannibal remains to be seen. Right now, some sort of return does seem unlikely, but stranger things have happened, so it’s certainly possible this story could be continued. For the time being though, fans of the NBC series may just have to accept that this iteration of the iconic character is simply no more.
